My story is one that took place late spring to early summer in the year of 1980.  On March 27th of that year Mt. Saint Hellens erupted.  My very dear friend who recently passed away, had told me years ago, that his son who was and is today recognized as an expert climber.

I was told his son received a call to do some consulting work. He was asked to put together a team of climbers who would scale the west side of the mountain.  Soon after, he was told to do some training at a facility with his group. For about 2 week, they train about a dozen men.

They then were told, that these trained men would be heading to a specific location on the mountain to retrieve some equipment. Knowing the mountain, his son said that with only two weeks training they would never make it. The official asked if it were possible to drop off the newly trained unit in a safe location near the target by helicopter?

Looking at some topographical maps they pin pointed where the drop could take place safely.  The big issue was that they would not be able to remove the men and their cargo by helicopter.  He was finally asked if he would take his team and head up earlier and find a secure way to remove all of them from the mountain. He talked to his team and they agreed.

Within a few days, his son headed out with his 5 climbers. Surprising the most difficult part of the climb was moving through the debris field of trees until they finally reached rock.  I am told the group then broke into 3 groups of 2.

They would look at different trails in hope that they would find the right path for minimally trained men to navigate without putting them and their equipment in danger.  They found that path a couple of days after.  They knew there was no communications. They regrouped and made the climb but found none of the men they trained at the drop off target.

They spent the day, again split up into 3 groups of 2 until one group of the climbers made contact with what he called a scout. They headed back to the group and then they headed back to where they had found the scout.  On their return, they were met with disbelief and what would be the shock of their lives. They met with an official who at first had difficulty with letting the climbers into the area where they had blocked off, but soon realized that he needed these climbers to help them get survivors off the mountain.

Turning a corner they witnessed a cave. They also witnessed about a dozen or so body bags.  Nothing too strange until they approached the bags and they thought they were seeing the defensive line of the Chicago Bears.  There were 4 bags about 4 to 5 feet. The rest of the bags were anywhere from 7 to what he described about 10 feet tall.  At that time they had not seen anything but the bags.

It was about an hour later when 2 Bigfoot stepped out of the cave with what he called a combination of officials & scientists.  The 6 of them could not speak a word, his son called it, a major case of total shock. There was some communication between the Bigfoot, the official and a scientist.  They were not allowed to go in the cave, so they set up camp.

The next day they started their decent.  Nobody said a word, even when they made it back to the base camp.

He told me that his son and others hooked up on the mountain and stated that there were other rescues going on but none were as difficult as this location to get in and out.

I was told this information in the late 90’s

We never discussed it again.
