  1. My daughter and I took a backpacking trip in the national forest in early June. We started at Horsethief lake and headed down trail 14 everyone turned back due to the fallen trees. We crawled and climbed over a massive amount of tree fall in one location that was a steep hill on one side and ravine on the other. We ended up just past the trail to rushmore during a lightning storm and ended up close to a river. It stopped raining early evening and stopped long enough for us to eat supper then was raining on and off all night. We noticed a tree branch was bent over and weaved into the tree on the other side, there were several of them like this by the river. I figured it could have been other hikers creating this. We decided we couldn't cross the river after the heavy rain and no good crossing was created. We decided to take the trail up to Rushmore the next morning and head back to horsethief lake and get a ride from my husband to another TH. When we were heading back about 6am there was a fresh track crossing the trail at an angle. This track was like a size 14 boot except wider and a couple toes visible. I asked my 17 year old what she thought of this when bringing it up to my husband she said it looked like a cartoon footprint in the mud. He wondered if someone was out there messing around I knew nobody was hiking in the storms that night or that early after the rain that night considering everyone we met on the trail couldn't get through due to the massive tree pileup on the trail. I still dont know what it was for sure but it's one of the most bizarre tracks I've ever seen.

  2. It would have been real nice if you described that track for us? All of those inter laced trees across your trail is a sign that our big guys could have been the perpetrators!
