The headline did not appear when this happened. The story was kept quiet up until discovery by noted author Zane Grey.
This event happened in 1922. Almeda Mine on the Rogue River in Oregon employed around 250 miners South of Galice, Oregon. During the Spring, five miners decided to search for their own gold. They went down river to find riches of gold. Two weeks of not finding gold, four of them decided to return to Galice hoping to be re-hired at the Almeda Mine.
Only one miner made it back. He claimed two giant "Ape-Men" attacked them.

A search party was dispatched in order to stop these reports of wild tales, afraid the rest of the miners would quit working for the mine. Searchers found the attack site after a week of arriving, they found two of the miners.
The report stated, The miners had been killed by a savage attack from an unknown animal. The third man was never found, but part of his pants and his hat were among some enormous sized footprints all around the men's bodies.
The party returned to the mine with the dead men's packs, and the foreman told them to keep quiet about their discovery or "lose their jobs" Since the Almeda paid well, no one talked.
The lone survivor disappeared and the story wasn't reported to the public until the famous author Zane Grey, who owned a remote cabin 15 miles along the river from Almeda Mine.
He heard about the incident. Did some research, found enough evidence to make an interesting story. This is an article found on several Bigfoot blogs & media sites.

What criteria is required for Bigfoot or Sasquatch to be "Officially" Discovered?
Bili Apes (Giant Lion-Eating Chimp) can grow to a giant size of six and a half feet tall & weigh over 200 pounds. This sub species of Chimpanzee was considered a myth, up until 1996. Then "Officially" Discovered in 2003.
Swiss photographer & anti-bushmeat activist Karl Ammann first visited the region in 1996, he was looking for gorillas. Instead he discovered a skull with dimensions like a chimpanzee, but with a prominent crest like a gorilla. Karl purchased a photograph taken by a motion-detecting trail camera, from poachers that captured an image of what looked like several immense chimpanzees. Ammann also measured chimpanzee footprints as large as a gorilla's.
In 2001, an international team of scientists, including George Schaller of the Wildlife Conservation Society and Mike Belliveau of Harvard University were recruited by Karl Ammann to search for the elusive Bili ape, but the venture came up empty.
After a five-year-long civil war ended in 2003, it was easier for scientists to conduct field research in the Congo. The first scientist to see the Bili apes, and also recruited by Ammann, was Shelly Williams, PhD, a specialist in primate behavior. Williams reported on her close and chilling encounter with Bili apes, "We could hear them in the trees, about 10m away & four suddenly came rushing through the brush towards me. If this had been a mock charge they would have been screaming to intimidate us. These guys were quiet, and they were huge. They were coming in for the kill – but as soon as they saw my face they stopped and disappeared."
"The unique characteristics they exhibit just don't fit into the other groups of apes", says Williams. The apes, she argues, could be a new species unknown to science, a new subspecies of chimpanzee, or a hybrid of the gorilla and the chimp. "At the very least, we have a unique, isolated chimp culture that's unlike any that's been studied", she says.
The Bili forest of the far northern part of the Congo lives a band of very large chimpanzees that have very unique characteristics, qualities & behaviors.
The local stories in the surrounding regions talk of a massive ape like creature that kill & hunt lions, catch fish along with howl at the moon. Local hunters also mention an animal that looks like a cross between a gorilla & a chimpanzee. An animal according to the stories, is not affected by poison darts as the other apes are.
