Middle of October to middle of November. You'll do good to find a spot up sixes river on the oregon coast . It's off hwy 101 . The masutaki mushrooms , berries and the winter run salmon are all plentiful. They migrate North out of the hoopa res. Area an into the kalmiopsis wilderness . They Stay coastal until they get to bandon oregon area then move east into the thick brush.
I seen mine November 1st 2004 . Real as it's gets man . . Be carful .. use common sense, I wouldn't shoot one because they're never alone . They travel in family units and someone always has the back of the one that's allowing you to see him/her .. usually him . !.
You'll see the late teen early 20s youngster before you see the alpha .. an thats only if the younger male don't succeed in running you off . If you do have an encounter it will most likely be a bluff charge , . Stand your ground . Then watch your ass . Be safe guys .

In late fall of 2004 I was into mushroom hunting bigtime . A couple friends of mine an I were having great luck with a mushroom called Masutaki ( Japanese pine) the buyers were paying premium money so Jason, Travis an myself went south on hwy 101 in search of New patches . We found croft lake an new river were producing 5x our old patches so that's how we ended up at storm ranch.
It's a federal game reserve so it had security, my buddies an I had been busted twice for illegal mushroom harvest an was warned if we got caught again it was gonna be serious, so after talking it over, we all decided it would be best to go stealth .
The night that I'll never forget starts with the 3 of us parking about ½ mile east of storm ranch an walking in on a small game trail , we got to our first patch an didn't have any issues ... about 10 min in , my buddy Jason was on all fours an found a decent patch under a huckleberry an Sala thicket. I watched his dim headlamp fade out as he crawled off . His cousin Travis an I waited hoping he'd come crawling back but he never did.
After about 30 min of waiting I heard a group of 7 to 10 free range cows @ my 7 o'clock start to get loud, mooing an running 20 or so yards east to west an back again .. always at my 7 , I didn't really think anything of it ( this was about 01:00 am ) .. I didn't think my friends was gonna make it back so the plan was to just finish the hike , picking mushrooms along the way an We'd just tie back in with him at the car ..
Well we didn't make it 100ft ( the brush was extremely dense) before I heard those cows again at my 7. The weird thing that stuck out to me was we were following new river an we had to walk north but always steering to the east with the intention of making a full 360° circle from where we entered the park where our car was.
The cows sounded panicked, they almost stampeding at this point an I realized they were scared of something behind them an also didn't wanna come near Travis an I. Essentially they were in between us an what I suspected was a bear or mountain lion , that made me really uncomfortable because the brush made it hard to see below my knees in a clear spot an other spots the brush was over my head .
So at this point I made it clear to Travis we had to just get to the car as soon as we could 3 more times before I got to the road I heard those cows an ever time it was at my 7. We were being flanked an it was obvious. Travis an I hit the cutbank of the road sat down an finally felt safer for a second..
THEN .. those cows sounded off in a field at my 9 o'clock an they were close I glanced at them out of the corner of my eye. I seen a flash of light brown hair , immediately I though elk because of the color , scrambling, I got to my feet dropped the apple I was holding an started for my flash light .. I heard very clearly 2 bare feet slapping the asphalt and they were moving ..
I got my light on it an it was running straight at Me , I couldn't tell if it was facing me or or looking down .. its arms were bent an swinging exactly as you would imagine an Olympic sprinter. This thing was running 45 mph or faster .. it covered 300 ft in the time it took me to stand up an find my light . .
It was about 30 ft from me when it came to a complete stop stood there an stared me down . . Its breaths were full an deep, but not like it was winded . I could see it's breath on the cold evening air . It was easily 4 ft across the shoulder , 8 ft tall. Nearly as tall as the road sign it stopped next too .
It's arms were hanging so low it could have been mid shin at the finger tips .. it had to have weighed 650 lbs .. its legs seemed to short to be able to move as fast as it did .. cone shaped head NO NECK WHAT SO EVER. ABSOLUTELY MASSIVE .
My next thought was this thing is going to realize all I have is a flash light an its gonna finish running over here an rip me apart !!. I was frozen with fear like I've never experienced before . An just like that it turned to its left an with 2 little pounces cleared a 2 lane road an hopped over a hedge of brush off the shoulder that stood 3 or 4 ft tall an extended off the road 25 ft.
I listened .. IT NEVER LANDED . IT JUMPED INTO THIN AIR . for the next 2 hours Travis an I sat with our back buried into the cut bank waiting for Jason .. the whole time I heard intelligent chatter coming from the tree line across the road directly in front of me . Sounded like a mash up of racoon mixed with the sound of large water drops hitting a hard surface . Really hard to explain the noises I was hearing .
I know it was intelligence because once the sound across the road stopped , the same exact intelligent sound answering back from the tree line above me on top of the cut bank .. that back an forth between multiple entities went on until about 330 am. I heard loud fast moving steps coming down the road an I thought it was coming back but this time it was my buddy Jason an he was pale as a ghost , he just wanted to leave an didn't wanna talk about anything..
I've never been back to that area .. ill never go back . No thanks .. sorry for the spelling errors but that's my story an id put my hand on a Bible an retell it any day . Yhwh bless you guys an happy hunting. Be safe 🙏
