Rare Oarfish Caught by Fishermen also Known as a "Doomsday Fish"

Fishermen catch an oarfish near the north end of Australia. Tiwi Islands Adventures, skipper Curtis Peterson was the sighing guide where his anonymous customers caught the serpent-like creature near Melville Island. The deep sea fish is usually found over 600 feet depth and will dwell up to 3,000 feet deep. Many cultures refer to the oarfish as a doomsday fish because it is thought impending doom such as a tsunami occurs after seeing one.

Unsubstantiated claims from Japan are that over 20 oarfish washed ashore during the months leading up to the 2011 earthquake & tsunami. The oarfish is known as the "ryugu no tsukai" meaning "the sea dragon god's palace" in Japan.
